The Ukrainian Library series from Wallstein Verlag is dedicated to the most famous classics of Ukraine’s literary legacy from the 19th and 20th centuries. It aims to raise awareness of the country and its culture. Edited by renowned authors, the collections open up new perspectives on a country whose culture and language have constantly resisted being oppressed and forgotten. Authors Tania Maliarchuk (“Blue Whale of Memories”) and Monika Rinck (“Champagne for the Horses”) present the series along with Claudia Dathe. It includes the sensitive, intelligent prose of Lesya Ukrainka (1871–1913) in the short story collection, Am Meer [“By the Sea”]. Way ahead of her time, Ukrainka wrote about female experience, freedom and self-determination – in a language that was forbidden and yet persisted in the face of all obstacles. Now, over a hundred years later, her texts are returning to the European canon. Reading by: Mariele Millowitsch
