Volker Kutscher’s Rath novels, which were adapted into the hugely successful “Babylon Berlin” TV series, conclude in 1938. After that, the fate of the characters – complicated commissioner Gereon Rath, brave Charlotte Ritter, upstanding Wilhelm Böhm and all the others – remains unclear. Now Volker Kutscher has created Westend, a brilliant conclusion to the series: In 1973, lecturer Hans Singer interviews the 74-year-old Gereon Rath in his retirement home. Although ostensibly about police work in the 1930s and 1940s, their conversation reveals entanglements with Nazis and East German authorities. In this suspenseful tableau, Volker Kutscher delves into Germany’s post-war history, with atmospheric illustrations by Kat Menschik, Germany’s best-known and most popular book illustrator. With music by Julian and Roman Wasserfuhr (trumpet and piano) and Jörg Brinkmann (cello). Host: Thomas Böhm
