Never forget – Eva Umlauf and Susanne Siegert between personal testimony and digital remembrance
Awareness of the horrors of the Holocaust is fading in the public sphere, in education, in our system of values. This is the observation of Eva Umlauf, Auschwitz survivor and one of the last living witnesses of the Shoah. In her urgent appeal, Genau so fängt es an [That’s Exactly How it Starts], she clearly states why we must act fast in order to prevent authoritarian powers from gaining even more ground. She talks to journalist Susanne Siegert, one of the influential voices of digital remembrance culture. On her channel, @keine.erinnerungskultur, she talks about the Holocaust on Instagram and TikTok. And in her book, Rethinking Remembrance: How Our Remembrance of the Holocaust Must Change, she advocates for a new, pluralistic kind of remembrance work. What should a culture of remembrance look like if it is to keep reaching future generations? Can social media create a respectful space for remembrance? Host: Shelly Kupferberg
