Matthias Jügler, Melanie Raabe, Katrin Schumacher and Caroline Wahl on telling the stories of long-forgotten species
with Caroline Wahl Katrin Schumacher Matthias Jügler Melanie Raabe
We Thought We Could Fly! This is the title of a literary anthology of both funny and unexpected contributions from 20 renowned German and international writers, edited by Matthias Jügler. These stories about animals and plants that have disappeared or gone extinct bring them out of the shadows of anonymity and into the limelight. Among other things, we meet a lovestruck Tasmanian Wolf, the giant vampire bat that once served as inspiration for a feared Mayan god, and the endangered Darwin’s frogs. Jügler and his co-authors Caroline Wahl, Melanie Raabe and Katrin Schumacher present the collection and their animal stories, celebrating the power of literary imagination to address a major ecological problem. The foreword expresses hope: “How nice it would be if these stories could teach us to pay more attention to that which is not yet irrevocably lost.”
