Decision in Spain: Paul Ingendaay and Nina Kunzendorf on literature’s big battle 1936–1939
July 18, 1936: A military coup starts in Spain. A few days later, the country is divided by a terrible civil war. Fascist powers Germany and Italy are backing the one side, while the Soviet Union supports the other side. Franco’s terror is the prelude to the Second World War. Caught up in the midst of it all: authors, reporters, photographers, something and adventurers – some of them have weapons, others have cameras or typewriters. Journalist and writer Paul Ingendaay, who was a correspondent in Madrid for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for nearly 20 years, explores this time in his new book: Entscheidung in Spanien: Der große Kampf der Literatur 1936–1939 [“Decision in Spain: Literature’s Big Battle”]. It tells the gripping stories of Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Martha Gellhorn, Pablo Picasso, Willy Brandt, Simone Weil, Federico García Lorca and many others. Readings at this event by Nina Kunzendorf.
