Macbeth – Three generations of Thalbachs read Shakespeare. With Nellie, Anna and Katharina Thalbach
For Katharina Thalbach, it’s a return to her roots: “Macbeth” was her directorial debut – it was celebrated across Europe, highly acclaimed in London and staged as a model production at Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris. Her interpretation could be seen on stage for nine years. Now, Katharina Thalbach returns to “The Scottish Play” – this time as a reading, starring her as Macbeth in a translation by Thomas Brasch. Together with her daughter Anna and granddaughter Nellie, she returns to Shakespeare’s dark tragedy, in which the “moving” woods, secretive witches and ruthless Lady Macbeth determine Macbeth’s destiny. The sharing of roles gives the reading a particular intensity – a multigenerational interplay between language, expression and sound. “Macbeth” becomes a family drama in the best sense: an exploration of power, guilt and fate – lively, direct and unmistakably Thalbach.
