Robert Menasse – The Decision
Austrian novelist Robert Menasse has won numerous honors for his novels, essays and short stories, including the German Book Prize in 2017 for “The Capital”, a satirical novel about EU politics in Brussels. His latest novella takes us back to the headquarters of the European Commission, the workplace of Franz Fiala – until one day he makes The Decision and quits. When he visits his mother in Vienna for her 89th birthday, he keeps his early retirement a secret. And this is not the only secret he is keeping: When he gets diagnosed with cancer and learns he doesn’t have long to live, Franz decides to deceive his mother to save her the pain of seeing him die. Is it possible to decide on one’s own life? To simply decide to continue living for longer than expected? In this existential tour de force, Menasse tells of a struggle with death.
