Good crime fiction often depends just as much on the setting, the landscape and the local color as it does on the cases and investigations. Four masters of their discipline set their stories in various regions (listed in descending order based on their distance to Cologne): The latest book by Wolfgang Schorlau sends Stuttgart-based investigator Dengler into the Black Forest. Set in Luxembourg, Tom Hillenbrand’s works are full of cooking, murder and criminal investigations (most recently: Fatal Champagne). Lenz Koppelstädter’s Commissario Grauner hunts down criminals in South Tyrol (most recently: On the Slopes of Death). And, every year, Jean-Luc Bannalec releases a new case for Inspector Dupin in Brittany (most recently: Breton Temptations). Crimes obviously happen everywhere, but are the murders in Stuttgart different than those on the Breton island Belle-Île? The authors discuss their investigators, cases, research and unique characteristics of the regions, in conversation with globetrotter Margarete von Schwarzkopf.
