Jan Ullrich’s life has been defined by competitive cycling – successes and triumphs but also falls. He was a sports star: In 1997, he was the first German to win the Tour de France, which triggered a cycling boom across the nation.
Ullrich once said that everything he did was extreme. His ability to push himself was part of it, but so was the lack of consideration for himself during his major life crisis in 2018. At that time, Ullrich was going through an addictive phase fueled by drugs and alcohol.
He did not find inner peace until he was prepared to accept professional help. Admitting that he had taken doping substances during his career freed him from a significant burden.
Jan Ullrich talks about all of this – his rise and fall, and how he found his way out of a profound life crisis – with author and journalist Stephan Klemm.
