Cycling & politics – Jean Asselborn and the tour of his life
For nearly two decades, he was a top diplomat shaping European politics, standing up for the European Union and human-centered policy. Until 2023, Jean Asselborn was the longest-serving foreign minister in Europe. And he is a passionate cyclist. Whenever possible, he brought along his racing bike on foreign trips. The 76-year-old still does a big bike tour in southern France once a year, climbing the tortuous ascents of the legendary Mont Ventoux. In Die Tour seines Lebens [“The Tour of His Life”], political journalist Michael Merten describes the eventful life of the politician from Luxembourg. The book is also an exciting travel reportage, a gripping political biography, a sensitive portrait and a well-informed glimpse into contemporary European history. Jean Asselborn will speak with Markus Preiß, head of ARD’s Berlin studio, to discuss his political life and his private passion: cycling.
