As the band Cat Ballou sings in local dialect in their carnival hit: “There are no words to say how I feel when I think of Cologne.” Yet, in spite of this apparent lack of words, Cologne has been described a lot over the years. Is it Germany’s finest city or a party location for anyone wanting to really cut loose? Carnival hotspot but otherwise only average? How much truth is there to these descriptions? For those who live there, Cologne is not a city in the literal sense but more of a feeling. For those who have moved away, it is somewhere to yearn for, a place they want to return to someday when it is time to put down roots. What’s working well here and what’s not? What’s shiny and what’s showing signs of rust? And is carnival really the defining feature of the urban society? Is Cologne’s development being hampered by all the carnival revelry?
Carolin Kebekus, Frank Schätzing and Günter Wallraff spill the beans about their hometown on the Rhine. Host: Katty Salié
