Bernhard Schlink – What is justice and how is it obtained?
Bernhard Schlink gained worldwide fame with his novel “The Reader”, which was translated into more than 50 languages, won national and international awards and was turned into a 2008 film starring Oscar-winner Kate Winslet. The bestselling author, lawyer and professor emeritus lives in Berlin and New York. Until 2006, he was a judge at the constitutional court for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Münster. Now he has published an insightful essay, entitled Justice. Everyone wants justice – always for themselves, sometimes for others, rarely for everyone. But what is justice, and how is it obtained? Bernhard Schlink offers neither an ideal concept nor a general formula. His objective is more modest: He shows how we must continually renew our search for fair solutions and how we can find them. Justice is work and Schlink’s text is a guide on that path. Host: Shelly Kupferberg
