Living despite everything – Birgit Virnich on the bravery, humanity and power of women in Ukraine
Birgit Virnich has been reporting for years from Kyiv as a television correspondent for ARD. In her book Leben trotz allem [“Living Despite Everything”], she turns her attention to the force upholding day-to-day life in Ukraine: women. She tells the stories of women who work and do care work, repair, fight and mourn – and keep going no matter what. Of human rights lawyer Oleksandra Matwischuk, who becomes a chronicle of war crimes. Of entrepreneur Natalia Olshanska, who is rebuilding her family’s business in Zaporizhzhia. And of Kateryna Seledtsova, whose pink café in Kramatorsk helps bring a bit of normality to the city. The stories of these and many other women build a powerful narrative about loss, resilience and resistance.
