What does a man who wrote history like to read? Olaf Scholz and the books of his life
Olaf Scholz was head of the German government from December 2021 until May 2025. Now, for lit.COLOGNE, the former Chancellor is opening the doors to his personal library – and to the intellectual landscapes that shaped who he is. In this special talk, he reveals which books inspired him as a young Social Democrat, which authors sharpened his political thinking, and which works provide him with orientation to this day. From world literature to political theory – and a few surprising book choices – this event paints a very personal portrait of the man behind the official title. It will be an evening about power and morals, language and conviction – and how literature can serve as a compass in a political life. Join Olaf Scholz on a journey of discovery through the thoughts, ideas and stories that have shaped his life – and discover which books he finds moving and inspiring today… Host: Bettina Böttinger
