Sister Deborah – Scholastique Mukasonga and Anja Herden on the story of a legendary prophet
Rwanda in the 1930s: While more and more people are converting to Christianity in East Africa, US-born missionary Sister Deborah predicts that the Messiah will be none other than a Black woman. Sister Deborah is accused of witchcraft and disappears mysteriously. Two decades later, Ikirezi, a brilliant academic in Washington, who was once treated by Sister Deborah, decides to follow the traces of the legendary prophet. She dives into the past to tell her story, but the magic of Sister Deborah is more powerful than she realizes. The work of Scholastique Mukasonga has resonated deeply with readers in France and the Anglophone world and has been honored with many prizes. “It is high time that the seismic stories she tells finally received more attention here, too” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).
