The legendary pub Haus Himmelreich, one of the last of its kind in all of the Ruhr region, is slated to close – what a disaster! In the pub’s final hours, many of the quirky regulars are there, with lots of stories to tell, many of which involve barkeeper Rita Urbaniak. But Rita never shows up that night. She has been running the pub since the 1970s, even though she actually wanted to do something entirely different with her life. During this time, she also raised her sister Chris’s daughter, who eventually left to make her way in the wider world. But where is Rita this evening? Will she miss the finale?
Frank Goosen’s novel Lovely Rita winds its way through the life stories of three unconventional women, returning again and again to the bar at which their fates crossed. In his usual hilarious style, the bestselling author describes a slowly disappearing biotope in this brilliant and warmly told tale.
