Güner Yasemin Balci and Jan-Philipp Reemtsma on their homeland, Germany
with Güner Yasemin Balci Jan Philipp Reemtsma Frank Plasberg
“I love my homeland, my language, my hood, my people, and the values guaranteed in our constitution: human dignity, equity and the right to freely develop your personality. For a long time, these seemed to be a given; today I see them as under threat.”
Güner Yasemin Balci is a journalist, writer, film maker and, since 2020, integration officer for the Neukölln district of Berlin. In Heimatland [“Homeland”], she writes about growing up in Berlin’s Rollberg district, about friendship and loss in a neighborhood that taught her about life. Jan-Philipp Reemtsma, founder and, until March 2015, head of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, wrote in his glowing review for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “The book is a tribute to the (to use the classic term) open society of her home country, Germany.” On stage, the two will talk about democracy, optimism and the problems faced by an immigrant society. Host: Frank Plasberg
