Botany of Madness – With Leon Engler and Doris Dörrie
with Leon Engler Doris Dörrie
“Irresistible. A book that is at once grave and light, tender and tough, satirical and earnest”, says Siri Hustvedt. “A fantastic book – profound yet comforting”, agrees Doris Dörrie, who meets Leon Engler at this event to discuss his novel Botany of Madness. It tells the story of a man who goes to great lengths to avoid going insane. After a mix-up leads to his mother being evicted and all her possessions being sent to a waste incineration plant, the narrator literally has nothing left but the wreckage of his own family history. It is a family tree of mental ill-health: a bipolar grandmother who attempted suicide 12 times, a schizophrenic grandfather, an alcoholic mother and a father with depression. From an early age, he is afraid of going insane. In the end, he does end up in an asylum – as a psychologist. And he soon finds himself asking what it means to be a “normal” person.
