HANNS-JOSEF ORTHEIL: SUSPENDED
In his fabulous new novel SUSPENDED, HANNS-JOSEF ORTHEIL whisks us away to Wuppertal in the late 1950s – a time of inner and outer reconstruction in West Germany. The book tells the story of six-year-old Josef, who moves with his parents from Cologne to Wuppertal, into an apartment building full of railway families. As a highly introverted loner with a passion for playing the piano, he finds it hard to overcome his inhibitions until he begins a new friendship with Mucke, the grocer’s daughter. But what grounds him most is writing stories – about trips on the suspended railway along the river, weird animals at the zoo or adventurous battles between groups of kids. Host: CHRISTIAN SCHÄRF
