In 2023, Hélène Carrère d’Encausse, France’s most famous Russian historian, dies and her husband passes away shortly thereafter. When cleaning out their apartment, her son, prize-winning author Emmanuel Carrère (“Yoga”, among others) comes across a sprawling family tree. This is the starting point of his family epic Kolkhoze: Across four generations, he traces the lives, loves and tales of woe of his forefathers, whose paths lead them to Russia, Georgia, Germany and France. This book is an attempt to break through personal and government lies. “Truth rarely sound more literary than in the work of Emmanuelle Carrère, who always reveals himself in his obsessions and weaknesses” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
