Umberto Eco was fascinated by conspiracies and complots, themes woven through his literary and academic work. What interested him most, long before our current crisis-plagued times in which such constructs flourish, was how people create conspiracies and send them out into the world, and how conspiracies fall on fertile ground and gain followers. In his novel “Foucault’s Pendulum” (1988), three journalists invent a global conspiracy – and end up believing it themselves. Eco’s most famous novel, “The Name of the Rose” (1980) is also chock full of conspiracies in and relating to the abbey’s unforgettable library.
Wolfgang M. Schmitt guides you through a highly entertaining literary labyrinth to discover the maelstrom of secrets and the dangerous desire to see intent and seek meaning everywhere. Axel Milberg reads from the great works of Umberto Eco. Concept: Joachim Hoell
