Shelly Kupferberg – Hours Like Days
In her novel “Isidor”, adored by readers and critics alike, Shelly Kupferberg traces the story of her great-great uncle. His eventful life, which led him from a shtetl in the furthest reaches of Galicia to the most elite circles of Viennese society, comes to an abrupt and tragic end when the Nazis gain power. Her second novel, Hours Like Days, takes us to Berlin in the 1940s. Martha E. is hard-working and extremely thrifty. These are good qualities for the position of concierge, which she holds in the apartment building owned by the Berkowitz brothers in the Schöneberg neighborhood of Berlin. Liane Berkowitz is a curious and fun-loving girl who comes from a good home. In the middle of World War II, she learns about love – and resistance to the Nazis. Decades later, Martha wanders the streets of Schöneberg, unkempt, with long, snow-white hair. Everyone who lives there has seen her, but barely anyone knows who she really is: a millionaire, and the first-hand witness of Liane’s momentous life. Host: Angela Spizig
