Paralysed by Fear. Richard David Precht on the disappearance of freedom of opinion
with Richard David Precht
An unaccompanied reading.
According to studies, more than half the German population feel they can no longer express their opinion freely. Why is that? Today, the more people stretch the boundaries of their individuality and take things “personally”, the more easily they become offended. Accelerated by social media and the corresponding shit storms, the risk incurred by free expression of opinions is growing exponentially, and the social cost is rising dangerously. Consequently, says philosopher Richard David Precht, our society is becoming Paralysed by Fear. Because how can bold political action, provocative art and a socially critical culture remain possible if someone is always outraged or offended?
He has developed a psychographic profile of society and calls on us to return the collective “we” to the foreground. His warning: “Freedom of opinion is too important and imperative to leave it to the right-wing populists.”
