Class-act book – Kevin Brooks: Bad Castro

from 9th grade, English/German

South London, a Saturday night full of riots and destruction; the summer heat lies heavy over the city. An unmarked police vehicle picks its way through the ruins and the burned-out shells of cars. Sitting in the vehicle is Castro, allegedly 16, probably younger, known to everyone simply as Bad Castro. The leader of a youth gang, he was on the run and has just been arrested by a young police officer named Judy. Two other officers are sitting in the car and lose their lives when it’s brutally rammed and attacked. Castro is able to rescue Judy and together they flee from the unruly mob, which is equally dangerous for both of them. Where are the boundaries between friend and enemy? And what is the true connection between Castro and Judy? Multiple award-winning author Kevin Brooks (whose accolades include the German Children’s Literature Award) is once again a guest in Cologne. German text and host: Tobias Goldfarb
