Since the violent death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini September 16, 2022, countless Iranians have taken to the streets. And the protests continue, even though protesters are being arrested, tortured and killed every day. People around the world are expressing their solidarity. The demonstrations are no longer just about women’s right to self-determination. The opposition is also fighting to free the entire society from an authoritarian, patriarchal and violent regime. The movement is online as well as on the streets. The internet can be a source of support and artistic expressions of solidarity but also a catalyst of hate. Journalist Ferdos Forudastan speaks to political scientist Azadeh Zamirirad, author Asal Dardan, journalist Isabel Schayani and actress Maryam Zaree about the power of the resistance movement, its desire for freedom and the role of the Iranian diaspora.
