It has been more than 30 years since the Berlin Wall came down, but German unity is overshadowed by a growing rift in society. Dirk Oschmann asks what it means to be stamped with an East German identity, including attributes such as populism, lack of understanding for democracy, racism, conspiracy myths and poverty. In his polemic work, Der Osten: eine westdeutsche Erfindung [“The East: A West German Invention”], he touches a topical nerve and reignites the East-West debate. Jessy Wellmer sees herself as a mediator and is trying to discover how we can still make German unification a success. In Die neue Entfremdung. Warum Ost- und Westdeutschland auseinanderdriften und was wir dagegen tun können [“The New Alienation: Why East and West Germany are Drifting Apart and What We Can Do About It”], she observes how the rift between East and West has been widening since the Ukraine war in particular. In conversation, the two authors will talk about why this is. What went wrong? And most importantly, how can we put it right? Host: Cornelius Pollmer
