Christian Kracht – Eurotrash

Reading without talk.

Christian Kracht’s novel Eurotrash starts with a memory. Twenty-five years ago, the unnamed first-person narrator of “Faserland” wandered through a Germany that had taken leave of its senses, from the island of Sylt all the way down to the Swiss border, and onwards to Zurich. In “Eurotrash”, the same narrator sets off once more – this time journeying not only into his inner self, but into the depths of his own family, whose history overlaps in tragic, comic and occasionally spectacular ways with the history of Germany. “Eurotrash” is a moving masterpiece of existential impact and sarcastic humor, “an event” (Die Zeit). “Kracht’s novel is a monstrous work about the destructive power of keeping silent for decades, across generations” (Der Spiegel). “For me, this is the best of German literature today” (Elke Heidenreich).
