Can Dündar, Mohamed Anwar, Günter Wallraff and the story of Erdoğan

turkish | german, in cooperation with KulturForum TürkeiDeutschland e. V.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is one of the most controversial politicians of the 21st century. He used democracy as an elevator to power and then shut it off once he’d reached the top. In their graphic novel Erdoğan, Can Dündar and illustrator Mohamed Anwar trace the roots of his passion, document the tactics he used to gain support as an Islamist in liberal circles, and explain how Turkey went from being a secular to an authoritarian Islamic country. The work is surprising, fascinating and sobering. Can Dündar was editor-in-chief of the renowned newspaper Cumhuriyet until he revealed how the Turkish secret service was illegally supplying weapons to jihadists in Syria. For that, he was arrested and forced into exile. In his absence, he was sentenced to more than 25 years in jail. He talks to Günter Wallraff about the current situation and possible ways out of the perpetual crisis.
