Three women and one man. Two experts in the German language and two virtuosos of English. Four poets who pursue natural phenomena with unique language and unflagging originality, turning the apparently familiar world around us into something amazing. Marion Poschmann (born in 1969) presents her anthology, Nimbus, whose title draws together cloud cover and halo, shade and glory. In Schiefern [“Slates”], Esther Kinsky (born in 1956) studies the flora and fauna of the Inner Hebrides. From there it’s only a small jump to John Burnside (born in 1955) and his Instructions for a Sky Burial. The poet Sujata Bhatt, who was born in India in 1956 and grew up in the USA, sees the whole world as her home and as material for her poems (The Stinking Rose). This collection was translated by Jan Wagner, who put together this evening’s program and will guide us through it.
