“If it’s not getting loud, it’s not handball!" With Heiner Brand, Pascal Hens, Stefan Kretzschmar, Sophie Passmann and Pangiota Petridou

A match lasts sixty minutes and you’re not allowed to play with your feet. Handball is non-stop action, tough but fair, fast-paced and real. Today we bring together Heiner Brand, who won world championships as both a player and national team coach, and UEFA Champions’ League winner Pascal ‘Pommes’ Hens as well as handball rock star Stefan Kretzschmar (Hölleluja! Warum Handball der absolute Wahnsinn ist [“Hellelujah! Why handball is insanely cool”]) and former Greek national league player and TV presenter Panagiota Petridou. They will discuss a game in which each team can take three timeouts and the coach’s instructions add to the fascination of it. They demonstrate how to read a match, what is meant by blocking, crossing, obstructing, fast breaks, quick restarts and Kempa goals. Not to mention, what makes the fast-paced game so fascinating and why handball is nothing less than “direct democracy with maximum brutality”, according to handball enthusiast Sophie Passmann, who guides us through the evening.
