Lena Gorelik and Dimitrij Kapitelman explore who we are

Streaming from Theater am Tanzbrunnen I German sign language available

In 1992, a girl moves with her family from St. Petersburg to Germany in pursuit of freedom. She leaves behind her grandfather, her dog Asta and her childhood. In the West, the 11-year-old is a refugee in a homemade parka who pronounces words so strangely that people laugh. But the German language eventually helps her – to grow up, to acquire the life she has been hoping for. Yet, the divide between the parents and the daughter grows wider. Especially when the daughter starts her own family. Who We Are is Lena Gorelik’s brilliantly written novel describing the pain of migration, even when it turns out well. As an adult, Dmitrij Kapitelman travels back to Kiev in search of his birth certificate. He left the country with his family when he was a young boy, full of hopes of a better life in Germany. With bittersweet humor, his novel A Formality in Kiev tells how this family ultimately ends up without any homeland at all. Host: Ferdos Forudastan
